The Breathing Jewel has an open channel, so air can physically move in either direction. But the intended method is simpler: inhale gently through your nose, then exhale through the pendant.
You do not need to draw air in through the silver. The useful part of the object is the resistance it adds to the outgoing breath.
The basic pattern
- Let the pendant hang or hold it loosely.
- Take an ordinary breath in through your nose.
- Bring the pendant lightly to your lips.
- Breathe out through the open channel.
- Remove it and return to normal breathing.
There is no prescribed count. The inhale should not be unusually large, and the exhale should not become a contest. Let the narrow opening slow the air rather than forcing air through it.
Why not inhale through it?
The channel is designed to create resistance. Pulling the inhale through the same narrow route adds work where none is needed for this ritual. It can also encourage a tighter seal at the lips or a more effortful breath.
Using the pendant only for the exhale keeps the sequence clear: an unrestricted inhale, followed by a gently resisted exhale.
It is also easier to keep the object comfortable and clean when it is treated as an exhale tool rather than something to breathe back and forth through continuously.
Can air moving the other way damage it?
No. There is no one-way valve to damage. The Breathing Jewel is a solid sterling silver form with a hollow passage. The recommendation is about comfortable technique, not a fragile internal mechanism.
If the channel ever feels blocked in either direction, stop using it and clean it. Do not try to clear it while it is at your lips, and do not push needles or other sharp objects through the opening. Follow the sterling silver pendant cleaning guide.
What if nose breathing is not comfortable?
Do not force a technique that feels wrong for you. Return to ordinary breathing and use the pendant only when you can do so comfortably. If breathing is difficult, painful or a recurring concern, seek appropriate medical advice rather than relying on jewellery.
The short answer
Air can pass both ways, but that is not the practice. Breathe in normally through your nose and let the pendant shape only the exhale. One quiet, comfortable breath is enough to begin.
